Pursuant to powers and duties conferred upon it by Telecommunications Proclamation No 49/1996 (as amended), article 14(1), the Ethiopian Telecommunication Agency, ETA, Specifies any telecommunications equipment that requires the Agency's approval before it may be connected to a public telecommunication system.
All telecommunications network, terminal and radio communications equipment intended to be connected directly or inter work with a public telecommunications network are subject to type approval.
ETA type approves and regulates the use of telecommunication equipment based on National standards published by ETA and other relevant international standards which prescribe the minimum technical requirements to be fulfilled by telecommunication equipment intended for sale and use in Ethiopia .
It is prohibited to manufacture, import or distribute, without obtaining prior approval, telecommunications equipment that requires the approval of the Agency.

• XDSL and Cable Modems
• Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM)
• Network Access Server (NAS)
• Router
• Switches (Ethernet)
• UHF/VHF Citizen Band radios
• VHF/HF Private Land Mobile Radios
• Private Automatic Branch Exchange (PABX) and Key Telephone Systems
• VSAT/Earth Station Equipment
• PSTN Switching and Transmission Equipment
• Mobile Switching Center Equipment
• GSM/UMTS/CDMA Base Station Controller Equipment
• GSM/UMTS/CDMA Base Transceivers Station Equipment
• Wireless Access System Equipment
• ISDN PRA Equipment
• ISDN BA Equipment
